Having played football in TV Jahn Hiesfeld, VfB Lohberg, MSV Duisburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach Academies for a long time, Çalık transferred to Rot-Weiss Essen at the age of 19. The same season, he scored 3 goals in 23 matches.


In the 2006-2007 season he rose to the First Team and appeared in the Germany 2. League with Rot-Weiss Essen in 31 matches and scored 2 goals. He played in German U21 National Team five times. Playing primarily in the forward position, Serkan can also play in the wings contributing to the attacks with his high speed and effective press.
